My Initial Thoughts

Sometimes, classic design is all you need to make the best music ever.

It does not have to be anything fancy, but additional features help, and it should be compact and lightweight.

That is exactly what Korg had in mind while making this synthesizer.

Therefore, I will guide you through all the specifications and features, so that you could decide whether this is the right product for you.

Feel, Specifications, Dimensions, and Integrations

The first thing you should know is that this is an analog modeling synthesizer.

Before you start explaining that the analog ones are better, hear me out.

Although this device just copies the sounds that the analog one makes, it does not make it a bad product.

It is only a more straightforward, user-friendly option that costs a lot less, but it gives you similar results.

Some people cannot even tell the difference, so why should you worry about it?

When it comes to the overall appearance, it features a busy design.

There are writings and buttons everywhere, and it might confuse you at first.

However, once you get to know it a bit better, it is not that difficult to use.

It is a powerful synth, even though it is a tad smaller when compared to other ones.

Measuring only 524 x 232 x 70mm, it is not something that would rock your world.

However, that makes it more compact and storing it when you are not using it should be a breeze.

As I said, it is not that hard to use it, but there is a learning curve there.

Although everything is a button away, some music enthusiasts do not like that.

In the end, it all comes down to preference.

The presets have different music genres, and that is what you should push first when you start working.

You pair that up with various patches.

There are sides A and B, so by clicking one of them, you are getting a somewhat different sound.

Still, if you are like me, this might not be enough for you.

If it is not really what you wanted, then you can tweak the sound further.

All the writings on this synth actually have a purpose - they tell you which controls you can use.

There are a lot of them, so you might not need to use every single one - but the options are there.

MicroKorg comes with a simple to use arpeggiator, so sequencing the notes should not be too complicated to figure out.

The main issue I have with this synth is that it has only four voices.

Granted, what did I expect? It is not a lot, and I presume that the problem was the lack of space or some technical flaw.

However, they sound good and do the job well.

Another thing I wish it had are the speakers.

There are two audio inputs, and you can connect your headphones or the speaker through them.

However, without that, you would be lost.

Advanced Features and Performance

One of the things I was happy to see when examining this synth is the vocoder.

It comes with it, so you do not have pay extra to get it.

And anyone who is into music producing would know how pricey it can be to get it separately.

So, the detachable microphone works with the vocoder setting.

If you were wondering what that is, let me explain.

This is a favorite setting nowadays, and almost every singer uses it, whether or not he needs it.

It picks up on the sounds that you make and turns them into robotic sounds.

It is a neat party trick, but it is also invaluable when it comes to making modern music.

The fact that they built it in is another plus.

On top of that, the vocoder itself has multiple settings, so again, you have so many options to choose from.

Pros & Cons of MicroKorg

Benefits

Affordable price

Very straightforward design, easy to use

It is very portable, easy to carry

Drawbacks

There is a learning curve with this synth

There are only four voices

You cannot save the music

My Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a good choice for people who are not that interested in newer technological advances.

MicroKorg works well, and it is fast enough for daily use.

There are multiple options to choose from, and the sounds are realistic and adjustable.

However, it is an old school synth, so if you are expecting miracles, it might not work for you.

Although you can easily change sounds with it, there are only four voices, so it limits your ability a lot.

Nevertheless, it is well-built and lightweight - perfect for playing at home or at a gig.

It is also a cheap alternative, so if you are just starting out, you should seriously consider getting it.
